NY state of mind

i'm a big nas fan. in the 'nas vs. jay-z' debate, nas wins everytime. one of his most celebrated albums was his debut, illmatic and and one of the best singles of that album was 'ny state of mind.' before jay-z jacked the idea, nas was putting it down on the real new york. below we see the influence has had on artists from across the us.

Let's begin with the original.

"i keeps some e&j sitting bent up in the stairway" fuckin classic new york!

Now here is Fashawn's version, Cali State of Mind of the Ode to Illmatic tape (which you should get if you haven't)

i like how he used the same cadence as the original... dope

Now we go to the northcoast, detroit. slum village alum, elzhi, kills it with Detroit State of Mind.

check out for his mixtape Elzmatic coming soon

and i'm saying. when REAL emcees are remaking your song a decade after you originally released it,you know your doing something right. it's like illmatic is hip-hoppers Kind of Blue. classic.

art in the streets

sometimes i get pissed when dope stuff happens that i'm unable to get to. like coachella (three years ago maybe). so i found out about this "art in the streets" exhibit opening in LA (moca). "what the f*ck does l.a. know about street art"... was the first thing that ran through my mind. then i remember that documentary, and it seems like something l.a. would do. besides... who needs to go to a gallery to see a neckface piece, when you can just walk to williamsburg. but seeing some futura pieces... only at toy tokyo. but alas, i live in brooklyn. and what is fresh, will come. so i just have to wait a year, and i'll get to see the exhibit when it makes its way to the brooklyn museum of art, conveniently a couple blocks away from my apartment. nice. i just ordered the book to hold me down. check the vid below for a little taste.

just for giggles...and mario!

i'm lucky to have come up during an era when creative video games were the norm, not the exception. nowadays, most video game publishers are public companies, beholden to investors, which results in cookie cutter, shoot-kill-perk shooters or horrible movie tie-ins. regardless, i have fond memories of the classics.. namely mario. if your like me, then this video is for you!!!

just cause

i haven't done a music post in a bit. so bam. this is still my jammy jam.

his style is something i'm trying to figure out (bite).

"i don't need psychology to see the dichotomy in me...." effin classic!!!
if you never checked out boxcar session, get it.... sucka

deadpan hotness

so the wifey and I have been on a parks and recreation kick as of late. i remember watching the first couple of episodes and not liking them. a couple months pass and i stumble across an interview with aziz ansari on the WTF podcast w/ marc maron (I recommend), where aziz spoke about the cast and the show. thanks to the magic of netflix, i promptly watched the second season in record time. i have now viewed it almost three times and am rewatching the first part of the third season. what's the draw... well amy pohler is great. aziz as tommy fresh kills!.

plus, rashida jones is just plan good to look at... and she's funny. and nick offerman is my new david brent. and the addition of adam scott is awesome (check out the now defunct but hilarious party down). but the real story is the andy and april relationship. chris pratt does doufus better than anyone i've seen and aubrey.... well aubrey.. is awesome. please watch the show. if you were like me and was turned off by the first season, tune back in because next to community, it is the best funny on tv.

seriously funny

braaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiinnnnnnnssssss!!!

i hated the vampire trend. hated it. vampires are half-demons, not poster boys. bleh.
zombies on the other hand, have been given their proper due in hollywood and in videogames. this trailer for dead island, a new zombie game,is epic. scratch that, it a masterpiece of modern entertainment. enjoy!

dub-what?

i've always wanted to be a drum and bass dj. i remember thinking that it was really classy. i mean look at this. those guys look like the brandy in a snifter crowd. although i got a couple of tracks (thievery corporation, luke vibert) i never explored further. plus, i was deeeeeeeeeeeeep into house music, so i couldn't switch it up, too much disco in my brain.ars)

recently (as in the last five years), i've been fascinated with the burgeoning dubstep movement. i loved jungle music back in the day.

absolutely bananas right?

well, well, well. now with this interweb thing, it's much easier to get access to music. so i'm thinking, why not become a dubstep dj. it really hasn't broken out large in the US. here in brooklyn , there is a growing scene it hasn't reached the ironic 80s or 90s music night status. i think 2011 is the year the dubstep really hits hard in the states.

my advice, educate yourself. check out this doc. get you a set-up and get busy!!

here goes something to wet your appetite. beware. this might kill your speakers and your SOOOOOUUUUUULLLLLLLL.(first-half is better than the second)

that jason derulo ish (@2:00) gets me everytime. everytime.

Back in the day

Been away for a minute, but back in the mix.

I've always had a love for mixtapes.

Apparently, so does Nas. Keep rocking them tapes!
